Ilyas Shah, Sultan Shams al-Din

Ilyas Shah, Sultan Shams al-Din
(?-1357)
In the early 1350s, Ilyas Haji, a former retainer of 'Ali Mubarak, the provincial 'ariz, overthrew Ikhtiyar al-Din Fakhra and proclaimed himself a sul-tan at Lakhnauti with the title Sahms al-Din Ilyas Shah. Later he shifted his capital to Pandua. In 1353, Firuz Shah Tughlaq mobi-lized a large army against him but in the end recognized Ilyas Shah's independence. Ilyas Shah is also reported to have made a plundering raid into the territory of Nepal. The dynasty established by him con-tinued to rule Bengal until 1415 when, after a short phase of anarchy, the throne was captured by Raja Ganesh.
